Design, Supply and Install Guard Railings

In May 2020 Integrated Fencing Ltd were approached by Morgan Sindall to supply, install designed and tested vehicle and pedestrian barriers, armco barriers and some standard pedestrian guardrail fencing.

Morgan Sindall are one of the largest construction companies in the UK and Integrated Fencing are currently working on several of their sites in Wales.  The Merthyr Bus station project is quite unique giving to the fact the building is purely electric to reduce the carbon footprint.  There is no gas or other fossil fuel supply to the bus station.  This means that all the needs of the building – for heating, hot water and so on – are covered by green renewable sources.

Morgan Sindall approached Integrated Fencing to aide in the design, supply and installation specifically for the pedestrian guard rail which had to take crowd loading and the vehicle barriers which were required to protect the public from the buses and be able to take the impact of a bus travelling at 30mph.  We met up several times with the projects team to discuss the requirements.  After several meetings it was concluded that the pedestrian barrier needed to meet P4 type guard rail and the vehicle barrier needed to comply with N2W4 for road restraint systems.

Now that the parameters of the design had been set Integrated Fencing then set about developing this detail into a workable design and specification.  This was made more difficult as both guard rails were being base plated on top of a concrete retaining wall that was raking, had several changes of direction and was radiused on the bottom section.  Integrated Fencing over came this by carrying out a thorough site survey for the first retaining wall but due delays on site and the lead time on the vehicle guard rail the design of the second retaining wall had to be done purely from CAD drawings.  As the design of the vehicle restraint barrier developed the client felt it looked too overbearing and asked if we could make it more appealing.  We did this by designing a system which replicated the look of the standard pedestrian guard rail, but with bigger sections of steel so it could withstand the impact of a bus.

Originally, we were tasked with getting all the fencing designed, manufactured, and installed by November of 2020.  However, due to delays on site the completion date moved to Summer of 2021 but we had finished the majority of the install prior to Christmas and handed over the project on time and snag free.  This was testament to the Integrated Fencing installation teams and management given this was during the height of the COVID – 19 pandemic and all the complications and restrictions it placed on the project.

“Integrated Fencing undertook the metalwork package on Merthyr Tydfil Bus Interchange, which included retaining wall and ground level guardrails, as well as vehicle parapet and road restraint systems. It was a challenging project with a high spec design to cope with the constant interface between live buses and pedestrians.

With models showing that the bus station can expect a daily turnaround of 520 buses per day, it was imperative that the metalwork systems were of the highest standards. Integrated Fencing worked tirelessly with us during the early stages of procurement to ensure the design brief was achieved, with public safety always highest on the agenda.

The senior management team are always amenable, ready to react to any queries and were more than happy to attend site to review any queries, as well as assist with additional client requests as the project progressed.

I would certainly look to use Integrated again on future projects, we at Morgan Sindall have also awarded them Sub-Contractor of the Year award 2020 for their outstanding works across all our live projects”.  – Derwyn Nicholas (Morgan Sindall).

This was a fantastic project to work on and we achieve handover time even with taking on covid restrictions and social distancing.

WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS HAVE TO SAY

Morgan Sindall have undertaken a number of contracts where Integrated Fencing, have been appointed to deliver security fencing, gates and hoarding works to our sites. We have always found them to be helpful throughout the project phases, whether this be the early stages tenders, through on-going design development and right up to completion and handover. The whole ethos of all Integrated Fencing staff aligns closely with our values as a business and as such, Integrated Fencing have recently been awarded our Sub-Contractor of the Year Award for 2020 for their consistent high performance. We would have no issues in recommending Integrated Fencing to anyone that is looking for first-class fencing contractor.   2021

Integrated Fencing the successful contractor, their tender was within budget and we were fully aware of their experience in the fencing industry and their pro-active approach.

Their directors visited the site to attend meetings to help us with the design of the system which was first class.
We would highly recommend We look forward to working with them on future projects
.

It did not go unnoticed that you were put in a very difficult predicament by the failings of our ground works contractor but despite this, you and your team stuck at it working late nights and weekends to help us achieve the completion date. It’s very rare to see a Managing Director rolling his sleeves up to help his team out but you did this on numerous occasions in atrocious weather conditions and on weekends and for this we cannot thank you enough.

This leads me on to your site team who worked extremely close with our site team for the duration of the project and despite the extreme weather and ground conditions they simply got on with it. They’re attitude and willingness to complete the job in hand is fantastic, this together with the standard of work produced all makes for a winning team.

I have worked with numerous quality men over the last 30 years, and this has to be up there as one of the best. Please pass on our thanks to your team. Thanks again for your efforts on the project and we wish you every success in the future and hope your business grows. It has been a pleasure working with you on YGGT and we look forward to the prospect of working with you in the near future.
