Securing Morriston Hospital, Swansea
Client: KIER
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Integrated Fencing Ltd was appointed by Kier to deliver the fencing package for Morriston Hospital in Swansea. This high-profile project required robust fencing systems to secure critical areas of the hospital, while adhering to strict health and safety standards due to the presence of high-voltage (HV) and low-voltage (LV) services on-site. Integrated Fencing was recognised for its exceptional performance with a “Most Promising Contractor” award from Kier.
THE CHALLENGE
The site presented significant challenges, including the need to safely excavate foundations near HV and LV cables to prevent service strikes that could disrupt hospital operations. The project demanded precise planning, innovative excavation solutions, and adherence to rigorous safety standards.
Our Solution
We implemented a comprehensive security solution to meet the client’s requirements.
BOUNDARY SECURITY
Integrated Fencing secured the boundary of the new generator slab with a 2,400mm high triple-pointed, D-section, base-plated palisade fencing system. This included three single-leaf gates, one of which was automated, while the others were fitted with emergency push-to-exit pads to comply with safety requirements.
ADDITIONAL FENCING SOLUTIONS
- 2,000mm high route-mounted palisade fencing to secure other critical areas of the site.
- Post-and-rail fencing around the swale and pond areas for environmental protection.
- 1,500mm high deer and rabbit fencing to secure the rear of the site, particularly along the HV cable supplying the generator slab.
EXCAVATION WITH VAC-EX TECHNOLOGY
To address the risks posed by underground utilities, Integrated Fencing utilised its tracked Vacuum Excavation (Vac-Ex) machines. These machines ensured safe excavation of foundations for the fencing and gates, eliminating the risk of service strikes. The Vac-Ex technology was also employed for the deer and rabbit fencing, which ran along the HV cable.
SAFETY ENHANCEMENTS
In addition to the fencing systems, Integrated Fencing supplied and installed a section of Armco barrier to protect the LV switch room from potential damage by delivery vans. This added layer of protection ensured the safety and longevity of critical infrastructure.
OUTCOME
Integrated Fencing successfully completed the project on time and to a high standard, maintaining a flawless safety record. The use of Vac-Ex technology and a collaborative approach with KIER ensured that the hospital’s operations were not disrupted during the works. The recognition received through KIER’s supply chain award highlighted the company’s commitment to safety, quality, and innovation.
