Lords Cricket Ground

January 2020 Integrated Fencing solutions were approached by WilkinsonEyre to supply and install a white picket fence to a certain design. The design needed to keep to Lord’s cricket club’s heritage.

The Client ISG gave Integrated Fencing a brief. ISG is a global construction specialist delivering where places and people thrive. We were awarded this project from ISG to design, supply and install the fencing to meet specification, design and budget. In 2017 MCC Members voted to develop the Ground from the Club’s own resources without recourse to enabling residential development. The Club continued with plans for the second phase of the Masterplan redeveloping the Compton & Edrich Stands, designed by two-time Stirling Prize winners WilkinsonEyre.

This job was to take place at Lords Cricket Ground in London. In January 2019, Marylebone Cricket club were granted permission by Westminster City Council to construct the two new three-tier stands. The construction of the new stands is scheduled to start in late August 2019 and be completed for the 2021 season. Most of the build will be carried out during the off-season and be completely halted for major matches. This was to ensure that no games were interrupted by having work going on so everyone was tasked to get their jobs done when there was no games taking place.

The fence would need to comply with the current crowd loading of 1.5kl/m. After a few proposals Integrated Fencing needed to develop this detail into a workable design and specification. The use of a D grade Oak post was Introduced. And a Sample piece was developed for approval. With some minor tweaks the design was near complete. We now added a steel shoe manufactured to house the oak post onto the precast concrete wall. The Design was then approved, and we went about sourcing the raw material which proved challenging with the COVID restrictions. Once we managed to source the timber, the oak would be milled to size and shape and then kiln dried.

Key Information

  • We had to comply with Coronavirus social distancing with all on site team members wearing masks whilst working
  • Work had to be completed within two weeks to ensure that it did not disturb the cricket season
  • The fence needed to comply with the currentcrowd loading of 1.5kl/m.

The challenges we faced were that Integrated Fencing were to comply with Coronavirus social distancing and all workers on site wore masks, washed hands and social distanced when on site. This was to ensure the safety of all workers. We also had to complete our works during off season at the Cricket ground or when there were no games on to not disturb the live games taking place. This was considered and installed within two weeks.

Lord’s cricket ground, known as the Home of Cricket, is owned by Marylebone Cricket Club and was Founded in 1814. Lord’s Cricket Ground, commonly known as Lord’s, is a cricket venue in St John’s Wood, London. Named after its founder, Thomas Lord, it is owned by Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) and is the home of Middlesex County Cricket Club, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), the European Cricket Council (ECC) and, until August 2005, the International Cricket Council (ICC). Lord’s is widely referred to as the Home of Cricket and is home to the world’s oldest sporting museum.

This was a great opportunity to work with ISG on this project and to carry out work for the Home of cricket. It looks fantastic all finished and we were pleased with the outcome of this and cannot wait to see games taking place now it is all finished.

It did not go unnoticed that you were put in a very difficult predicament by the failings of our ground works contractor but despite this, you and your team stuck at it working late nights and weekends to help us achieve the completion date. It’s very rare to see a Managing Director rolling his sleeves up to help his team out but you did this on numerous occasions in atrocious weather conditions and on weekends and for this we cannot thank you enough.

This leads me on to your site team who worked extremely close with our site team for the duration of the project and despite the extreme weather and ground conditions they simply got on with it. They’re attitude and willingness to complete the job in hand is fantastic, this together with the standard of work produced all makes for a winning team.

I have worked with numerous quality men over the last 30 years, and this has to be up there as one of the best. Please pass on our thanks to your team. Thanks again for your efforts on the project and we wish you every success in the future and hope your business grows. It has been a pleasure working with you on YGGT and we look forward to the prospect of working with you in the near future.
