Securing Pontypridd High School

Client: Morgan Sindall

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Integrated Fencing Ltd was appointed by Morgan Sindall to deliver the fencing package for Pontypridd High School. The project involved designing, supplying, and installing fencing to create secure external and internal boundaries for a new primary school facility integrated within the existing comprehensive school, accommodating pupils aged 3-16.

THE CHALLENGE

The site presented significant challenges, including the need to segregate the primary and secondary facilities with over 1,000m of 2.4m high V-mesh fencing. The front elevation of the school had high-voltage and low-voltage power cables, along with data services, due to a Western Power compound. This required careful excavation and innovative solutions to avoid service strikes while maintaining a live school environment.

Our Solution

We implemented a comprehensive security solution to meet the client’s requirements.

BOUNDARY SECURITY

To segregate the primary and secondary school facilities, Integrated Fencing installed over 1,000m of 2.4m high V-mesh fencing. This system was used to secure both the site boundary and internal interfaces, creating clear divisions between the two schools while maintaining safety and accessibility.

COMPOUND SECURITY

To secure the Western Power compound, Integrated Fencing installed palisade fencing designed to meet Western Power’s specifications. This robust and compliant fencing ensured the safety and integrity of the critical infrastructure within the compound.

EXCAVATION WITH VAC-EX TECHNOLOGY

The front elevation of the school posed challenges due to high-voltage and low-voltage power cables, as well as data services from a nearby Western Power compound. To mitigate risks, Integrated Fencing utilised its Vacuum Excavation (Vac-Ex) machines to safely excavate post foundations, ensuring no service strikes occurred. This approach also assisted other contractors working in utility-dense areas.

ADDITIONAL INTERNAL INSTALLATIONS

Integrated Fencing delivered several tailored solutions for the internal areas of the school, including:

  • 1.2m high ROSPA Bow Top Fencing for the soft play area, ensuring pupil safety.
  • Bespoke vertical bar railings, core drilled into retaining walls, providing a customised, secure solution.
  • DDA-compliant handrails to ensure accessibility for all users.
  • Timber hit-and-miss compounds for bin storage, combining functionality with aesthetics.
  • Timber post-and-rail fencing to secure swales and prevent pupil access to sensitive environmental areas.

OUTCOME

Integrated Fencing successfully delivered the project to a high standard while meeting all safety and programme requirements. The use of Vac-Ex technology ensured the project was completed safely, avoiding utility damage and minimising disruption to the live school environment. The team’s ability to meet targets, adapt to bespoke requirements, and absorb additional works contributed to the project’s early completion.

  • Installation of over 1,000m of 2.4m high V-mesh fencing for boundary and internal segregation.
  • Safe excavation using Vac-Ex machines to manage underground services.
  • Delivery of bespoke fencing solutions and accessibility features.
  • Coordination within a live school environment to ensure minimal disruption.

CLIENT TESTIMONIALS

“The fencing package on this scheme was particularly difficult due to the multiple differing types of fencing required and also the fact that it was spread over a vast site within a live school. There were also bespoke elements that required detailed design and insitu measuring. Throughout the project Integrated fencing performed superbly. They hit every target given to them and also succeeded in helping us achieve the early completion of the project including absorbing additional works given to us by the client. At all times they worked safely and produce work to the highest of quality. Well done to Dean and the team”
